AMS Students Present at Calaveras County Board of Supervisors Meeting

Avery Middle School students presented recognition awards to those who contributed to the Calaveras County Lip Sync Competition.  They were guided by Outside School Activity Director, Alice Montgomery.  The following is from an email to Mr. Nicotero after the presentation.

"As you know, yesterday, Dec. 4, Edan Anglin, Carnegie Hall, and Alden Salazar made a presentation at the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors meeting.

Prior to the meeting, the three students were coached on proper presentation etiquette, refined word enunciation and pacing, breathing techniques for voice projection, posture, eye contact, shaking hands, and tips for confident and succinct speaking.

Your students did a great job.  You can see them in the link below during the time period 17:35-21:17. Enjoy

    A request for band instruments

Do you have an instrument or musical supplies that you no longer use at home? Our local schools music department is growing and is in need of additional support.

"The good news is there has been much more interest with instrumental music this year and all the instruments Mr. Allured has access to are out in the hands of students.  The bad news is that AMS is need of a trombone and reeds for our wind instruments."  Scott Nicotero, Principal

From Dave Allured, Band Director for VUSD and BHHS-

I have a list of requests for instruments at the elementary, middle, and even high school level.  I might have access to some loaners, but some may need repairs.  I've told the students that they might not get their first choice of instruments, but that I would try to get what I can.  I am currently OUT of instruments, with no options left!  Yay!  That means no more instruments in the VUSD, CCB, or BH inventory that are not committed to students.  Also, I have no more clarinet reeds.  I gave out my last one on the very first day!  So, I'll be going to the music store tomorrow on my way up the hill.

    Michaelson Elementary - 3 Flutes

Hazel Fischer Elementary - 2 clarinet mouthpieces (I will look also - may have one or two around), 1 trumpet ,  2 working flutes in exchange for two that may never work, and one trombone, or another trumpet.

Avery Middle School - 1 trombone, reeds.

    Bret Harte - 1 trumpet

Not everything has to be what I ask, but if we can find 9 instruments someplace, that would be really something.  We are underway already, so if you have something, I'm willing to drive to get it.

Thank you all so much, and take care,

    Dave

    Data system and Parent Portal

To our Avery Middle School families –

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  I trust you are ready and wanting to get the new school year off to the best start possible for your AMS student(s).

As such, many families have been calling with concerns accessing student academic info through a parent portal.  Most of you were familiar with our former data system, Infinite Campus, and the parent portal which allowed parent access to student grades, missing work, etc.  Over the summer, our school district made a move to a new data system called Aeries.  The process of converting to a new data system is arduous to say the least and not without a learning curve.  While our school district staff attempt to learn the new electronic gradebook system in Aeries, parents/guardians will not have access to a parent portal.  We have targeted a “go live” date of 10/1/18, just before parent/teacher conferences and trimester one progress reports.  At that time, we expect that parents will have access to the Aeries “parent portal” to view student grades, missing work, etc. just as we had available previously.  We very much apologize for this inconvenience as we know how important keeping up on our students’ academics can be.

During this time before the Aeries “parent portal” goes live, please feel free to phone or email our teaching staff as needs arrive for your student(s).  We have every intention of keeping up the high level of communication our families have come to expect and appreciate here at AMS.  Student success remains our highest priority!

If you have further questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at 209-795-8520.  Your patience, understanding, and consistent support is very much appreciated.

    Respectfully,

    Scott Nicotero, Principal

Snow Day and Late Start Procedures

    • Manager of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation (MOT) will issue an “all call” via messenger system to parents and staff by 5:30 a.m.

    • Snow day procedures will be announced on www.mymotherlode.com and FM radio stations KKBN 93.5 and KVML 102.7 and STAR 92.7

    • Snow Stops – snow bus stops are in effect when the conditions prevent our buses from safely entering the subdivisions.  An “all call” will not be broadcast for snow stops.  If in doubt, plan to take your child(ren) to a snow stop.

    • A snow stop in the morning means a snow stop in the afternoon.
    • There could be a regular stop in the morning and a snow stop in the afternoon if conditions change during the school day.
    • Route and snow stop schedules can be found on the website:

vallecito-ca.schoolloop.com under the Parent Resources tab.

    • Ski Trips – If it is raining, snowing and/or forecast for snow during the day, trips will be cancelled.  Ski trips may be rescheduled, if possible.

    Winter Weather Reminders

    Winter Weather Reminders

All families of Vallecito Union School District will be notified by automated telephone message of "late start" days or school cancellation due to snow or icy conditions. Please make certain the school office has your current phone number on file to assure you will receive these messages. Once a decision is made to cancel school, the decision will not be changed at any time during that day.

When ice and/or snow conditions exist, the bus stop for Forest Meadows will be on Highway 4. A "Highway Stop" (buses will not go into the subdivisions) in the morning means there will also be a highway stop in the afternoon. In the afternoon, please be aware that there will be a "Highway Stop" if roads become snowy/icy during the school day.

Sometimes weather conditions east of Michelson School on the Highway 4 corridor dictate late start/school cancellation even though below Murphys may not be experiencing hazardous weather. This is in part because school bus transportation may be hampered as our bus is required to travel between VUSD campuses. You may check for school closure/late start information at mymotherlode.com.
